What is Yoga?

Yoga is a mind and body practice with origins in ancient Indian philosophy. The various styles of yoga typically combine physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation or relaxation. Common styles include Hatha & Vinyasa/Power, Kundalini, Restorative, and Yin. The science behind yoga.

Hatha/Vinyasa/Power Yoga– if you have attended a mat or chair yoga class, it was most likely a Hatha or Vinyasa Flow style class. In a Hatha yoga class you will hold each yoga pose for 3-5 breaths. In a Vinyasa Flow class you will flow from one pose to another with each breath. Power Yoga is an extension of Vinyasa Yoga. Power Yoga often includes some pilates-inspired movements for additional strength and core development.

Kundalini Yoga “The yoga of awareness”– Kundalini yoga focuses on Om and Mantra meditation.

Restorative Yoga– Restorative yoga utilizes a variety of props (pillows, blocks) to fully support the body. The purpose of this style is to reduce your level of stress and inflammation.

Yin Yoga “The yoga of stillness”– Yin Yoga uses traditional seated yoga poses held for 3-5 minutes each. The long holds allow for the body to make changes to the soft tissue. Yin yoga is ideal for those recovering from injury or as a complementary activity to fitness classes.
