What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of several techniques that make up the system of care provided by those trained in traditional medicine from China and other Asian countries. Most frequently we think of acupuncture as the penetration of thin needles into the body at acupuncture points to effect a change.

What is Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA)?

Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA) is an Auricular Therapy (ear) protocol that was invented by Dr. Richard Niemtzow, MD to be used on the battlefield when it was not advisable to use western pain medications. BFA can assist in pain relief and in many cases eliminate the need for pain medication for acute and chronic pain

Will BFA Help My Pain?

There is evidence that acupuncture needles reduce pain in two ways:

  • it reduces pain message transmission at the spinal cord
  • chemical transmitters (including endorphins) are released in the brain, decreasing the sensation of pain.

About 80% of people have reduced pain symptoms. Most patients can expect to have several days of relief with the first treatment.  Getting Battlefield Acupuncture after the first treatment can extend the time you have pain reduction.

Do Battlefield Acupuncture Needles Hurt?

Tiny needles are inserted into five distinct points in the outer surface of the ear and fall out on their own in two to four days. You may briefly feel minor discomfort upon placement of the needles. You may take the needles out with tweezers or fingernail if the needles cause too much discomfort.

Who Should Not Get Battlefield Acupuncture?

  • If you are pregnant or might be
  • If you are afraid of needles
  • If you are at risk of bleeding
  • If you are scheduled to have a MRI while needles are in your ears
  • If you have not been seen by your primary care physician for your chronic pain issue first

Are There Any Side Effects?

Possible but uncommon side effects at the needle sites or from  the needles may be:

  • Pain or discomfort
  • Bleeding or bruising
  • Infection
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Fainting
  • Euphoria
  • Drowsiness
