Biofeedback

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a process that uses your body’s own signals like heart rate and body temperature to bring about healthy changes. Biofeedback can improve health issues that are caused or worsened by stress.  Using a two-step process, biofeedback can help you relax and reduce your stress.

It can be used as a stand-alone therapy or complementary treatment for a variety of problems including:

  • Chronic Pain
  • Headache
  • Hypertension
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Insomnia
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Diabetes

How does it work?

Using precise equipment that measures and “feeds back” your body’s signals with visual and auditory displays, you will be guided in a two-step training protocol. First, you will use the feedback to increase your awareness of body signals and how that relates to your symptoms. Then, you will learn specific mind-body skills that increase your ability to regulate and balance the body to decrease those signals. The biofeedback equipment and trainer act as teaching tools to make your learning process effective and enjoyable, but your ability to recognize and respond will become more automatic with practice. Eventually, you will no longer need a trainer or computer program, and you will be able to use your training anytime and anywhere.

The Time Commitment:

Approximately 6-12 sessions with between session daily skill practice. The first 4 to 5 sessions will be weekly, and remaining sessions will be 2-4 weeks apart.

For Scheduling:

If you are interested in biofeedback please schedule an appointment to meet with the provider for an initial screening and education session where we can discuss how biofeedback works, how it might apply to your problems, and whether or not you would like to commit to the training process.
